Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: "FOR LOVE'S SAKE"

Verse of the Day: Romans 12:10

Devotional Message:
(Romans 12:10)
"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves."

Story
There was a young man named Carlo who had an older brother named David. As children, they were like many siblings—sometimes they played happily together, but often they argued about little things. They would fight over toys, complain about who got the bigger share of food, and even compete about who was smarter. Their relationship wasn’t perfect, and they both had moments of selfishness.

One day, when Carlo was in college and David was already working, David became very sick. He had to stay in the hospital for weeks, and doctors said recovery would be slow. Carlo was faced with a choice: would he continue being distant, or would he show love despite the past? Without thinking twice, Carlo chose love. He visited David every day, sometimes staying for hours just sitting beside him. He brought food, helped him sit up, and even read the Bible to encourage him. When their relatives saw what Carlo was doing, they were touched. They asked him why he was giving so much time and effort. Carlo simply smiled and said, “For love’s sake—because he’s my brother, and I love him.”

Even though they used to argue a lot, love was stronger than their past mistakes.

Observation
In Romans 12:10, the apostle Paul gives us a very simple but powerful command: "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." Let’s slow down and really think about what this means.

First, "be devoted to one another in love" means that our love for others should not be shallow or based on feelings that come and go. True devotion means commitment. It means standing by people in both good times and bad times. It means loving not just when it’s easy or convenient, but even when it takes sacrifice, time, or effort. This kind of love does not give up easily.

Second, "honor one another above yourselves" challenges the way we naturally think. As human beings, it’s easy to focus on ourselves. We often ask, “What do I want? What makes me happy? What about my needs?” But Paul teaches us to flip this thinking around. Instead of putting ourselves first, we are called to put others first. Honoring others means seeing their worth, treating them with respect, and considering their needs even before our own.

This is exactly the kind of love Jesus showed us. Jesus left heaven, came to earth, and served people humbly. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and forgave sinners. On the night before He died, He washed His disciples’ feet—a job usually done by servants. And finally, He laid down His life on the cross for our sins. He did all of this for love’s sake.

When Paul tells us to be devoted and to honor others, he is calling us to love like Jesus—steadily, humbly, and sacrificially.

Application
Now, let’s think about how we can apply this in our daily lives. Sometimes, it is easy to hear a Bible verse and think, “That sounds nice,” but not know what to do next. So here are some clear, simple ways we can practice this kind of love:

1. In our family

Help your parents or guardians with chores, even if you’re tired.

Be patient with younger siblings instead of getting easily annoyed.

Say sorry quickly when you hurt someone, even if you feel proud.

Forgive easily, remembering that relationships are more important than winning an argument.

2. In our friendships

Listen when a friend is sharing their problems, instead of just talking about yourself.

Celebrate other people’s successes without feeling jealous.

Stand up for a friend when others are gossiping or leaving them out.

3. In church and community

Volunteer your time to help in small ways—cleaning, singing, or helping in children’s ministry.

Visit someone who is sick or lonely.

Pray regularly for others and encourage them with kind words.

4. At school or work

Help classmates who are struggling to understand something, even if it means taking extra time.

Share materials or resources with those who don’t have much.

Speak words that build up, not tear down.

Sometimes, showing love means doing something big, like Carlo did when he took care of his sick brother. But many times, love looks like small, simple actions done every day.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for loving me first. Teach me to love others with patience, kindness, and humility. Help me to honor and serve them for love’s sake. Amen.
