Devotional Message:
(Genesis 39:8)
"But he refused."

Observation:

The story of Joseph is one of the most powerful testimonies in Scripture about integrity, faithfulness, and trust in God through difficult situations. In Genesis 39, we find Joseph working in the house of Potiphar, an Egyptian official. Even though he had been betrayed by his brothers and sold as a slave, Joseph remained faithful to God and worked with excellence. As a result, Potiphar put him in charge of his entire household.

But just when things seemed to be going well for Joseph, temptation came knocking.

Potiphar’s wife began to desire him. Day after day, she tried to seduce him, offering him pleasure and secrecy. Think about how difficult this must have been for Joseph. He was young, far from home, in a land where no one would hold him accountable. There was no one to watch or stop him. He could have easily said, “Why not? I deserve this. No one will know.”

But instead, the Bible says something very simple, yet incredibly powerful: “But he refused.”

This wasn’t just a quick, emotional reaction. It was a firm decision. Joseph wasn’t just running from a woman—he was running toward holiness. He had already made up his mind that he would honor God, no matter the cost. He refused to sin, not just out of fear of getting caught, but because he knew who he was, and more importantly, he knew who God was.

He said in verse 9, "How then could I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" That statement reveals the heart behind his decision. Joseph didn’t measure his choices by what he could get away with—he measured them by his relationship with God. That’s what true integrity looks like.

Application:

We live in a world that constantly tells us to follow our feelings, to chase pleasure, and to do what makes us happy—whether or not it’s right. Like Joseph, we are all faced with choices that test our
