Devotional Message:
(1 John 1:3)
"We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us."

Observation:

This verse comes from the opening of John's first letter, and it’s full of meaning, not just for those who first read it, but for us today.

John begins by saying that he and the other apostles are not sharing a secondhand message. They are not passing along rumors or religious ideas someone else made up. No — they are proclaiming what they personally saw and heard. They lived alongside Jesus Christ. They heard His voice, saw His miracles, watched Him love the outcast, and even saw Him crucified — and then risen again. John is testifying about real experiences, not theory or tradition.

He doesn’t say, “We teach you a doctrine,” or, “We are explaining a philosophy.” No — he says, “We proclaim what we have seen and heard.” This is the language of witnesses, not just messengers. John is acting like someone who’s seen a great event and simply has to tell someone else about it.

But why is he so eager to share it? He says, “So that you also may have fellowship with us.” That word fellowship means more than friendship. In the Greek, it refers to koinonia — a deep, spiritual connection and partnership. John wants readers not only to know about Jesus but to enter into a relationship with Him — and with the wider family of believers.

He continues, “And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.” This tells us that fellowship with each other is possible only because of our fellowship with God. That’s the source. That’s the goal. When we tell our story, it’s not just about growing the church in numbers. It’s about introducing others to the God who changes lives, heals wounds, and gives purpose.

Now let’s bring this into our everyday lives.

We live in a time when people are bombarded with information,
