Devotional Message:
(Luke 17:18)
"Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?."

Observation:

In Luke 17, this is the account of ten men who had leprosy. Leprosy wasn’t just a sickness; it was a life sentence of isolation. These men were outcasts. They were not allowed to live with their families, enter towns, or worship with others. People avoided them out of fear. They didn’t just suffer physically—they were emotionally, spiritually, and socially broken.

When Jesus was passing between Samaria and Galilee, these ten lepers stood at a distance and cried out: “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” They knew Jesus had power. They had probably heard the stories of His miracles. But because of their condition, they didn’t come too close—they stayed at a distance, yet hoped for mercy.

Jesus responded in an unexpected way. He didn’t heal them instantly. Instead, He said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” This was the custom for lepers who believed they were healed—the priests would examine them and confirm if they were clean. The amazing thing is, as they went, they were healed. Their healing happened in the process of their obedience.

Imagine the joy they must have felt! The disease that stole their dignity and future was gone. Their skin was clean. Their shame was lifted. They could go home again. They could hug their children again. They could go to the temple and worship again.

But out of the ten, only one came back to thank Jesus.

Jesus asks, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?”

Only the Samaritan—a man who was doubly rejected, both as a leper and as a non-Jew—returned. He didn't just say “thank you” casually. Scripture says he came back, praising God in a loud voice, and he fell at Jesus’ feet. His gratitude was deep, humble, and sincere.
