Devotional Message:
(John 20:16)
"[Mary turned toward him and cried out...'Rabboni!' (which means Teacher)."

Introduction:

Have you ever been in a crowded place, like a market, a church, or even a school hallway, where everyone seems to be moving around—yet someone calls your name, and instantly, you turn around? There’s something powerful about hearing your own name. It captures your attention. It’s personal. It means someone sees you, someone knows you.

That’s exactly what we see in John 20:16. Mary Magdalene is standing outside the tomb, weeping. She is heartbroken. She believes that Jesus—her Teacher, her Lord, the One who had changed her life—is gone forever. She came to honor Him, but now even His body seems to be missing.

She is overwhelmed with sorrow, blinded by grief. She doesn’t recognize Jesus when He stands near her. She mistakes Him for the gardener. But everything changes the moment He speaks one word:

“Mary.”

Observation:

This simple moment holds an extraordinary truth. Mary did not recognize Jesus by His appearance. Her eyes saw a man, a stranger. But her heart recognized His voice. It wasn’t until Jesus said her name that she realized who He was.

Why is that important? Because it shows us how personal Jesus is. The resurrected Christ—the risen King of glory—took the time to speak her name. Before announcing His victory to the world, before showing Himself to crowds, He met Mary in her brokenness and called her personally.

She didn’t have to earn it. She didn’t have to be important in the world’s eyes. She just had to be present. And when He said her name, her eyes were opened. Her sorrow turned to joy. Her despair turned to worship. Her fear turned to faith.

Jesus didn’t just rise for the world in general—He rose for each of us personally. He knows our names. He knows our stories. He knows our pain. And He meets us where we are, just like He met Mary.
