Devotional Topic: Do Not Be Afraid—He Is With Us
READ: John 6:1-21
Verse of the Day: John 6:20
Devotional Message:
(John 6:20)
"But he said to them, 'It is I; do not be afraid.'"
Observation:
In this verse, we find the disciples in a boat, facing a powerful storm in the middle of the sea. They had seen Jesus perform miracles before, like feeding thousands with just a few loaves and fish. But now, in the darkness and rough waters, they were afraid. As the wind howled and waves threatened to overturn their boat, they saw someone walking on water toward them. Terrified, they didn’t recognize Him at first. But Jesus spoke to them, saying, “It is I; do not be afraid.” In that moment, their fear was transformed into peace because they knew Jesus was there with them.
This simple statement, “It is I; do not be afraid,” is packed with meaning. “It is I” is Jesus' way of saying, “I am here,” or even, “I am” (similar to how God identified Himself to Moses as “I AM” in the Old Testament). Jesus is not just telling them who He is; He is showing them that He is God, fully present in their lives and in control of every situation, even when it feels impossible. When Jesus says, “do not be afraid,” He isn’t dismissing their fears or saying they shouldn’t feel afraid. Instead, He is inviting them to trust Him, to let His presence calm their hearts despite the storm.
Application:
Life often feels like a storm. There are times when we face situations that seem beyond our control—moments when fear and worry surround us. Maybe it’s a health issue, financial struggle, or a relationship problem. Whatever it is, it can feel like we’re in the middle of a storm, just like the disciples, with darkness all around and waves crashing over us.
In these moments, Jesus’ words to His disciples are words for us, too: “It is I; do not be afraid.” Jesus reminds us that He is present and in control, no matter how frightening things look. We may not always feel His presence, and sometimes it may feel like we’re on our own. But faith means trusting that He is always there, walking toward us in the middle of the storm, ready to help us if we just trust Him.
So, how can we put this into practice? Here are some ways:
1. Remember who Jesus is – Take time to remember the power of Jesus. He is the same Lord who fed thousands, healed the sick, and walked on water. He is the same Jesus in our lives today.
2. Acknowledge our fears honestly – Jesus doesn’t tell us to ignore our fears; instead, He calls us to bring them to Him. When we’re honest about what scares us, we open the door for Jesus to meet us in those fears.
3. Invite Him into our situation – Just as Jesus entered the disciples’ boat, we can invite Him into our lives, our “boats.” Whether through prayer, reading the Bible, or simply asking for His help, we can bring Him into every challenge we face.
4. Take small steps of faith – Faith is not always about big leaps. Sometimes it’s about small steps—choosing to pray when we’re afraid, trusting God with our next step, or simply choosing to believe that Jesus is with us even when we don’t feel it.
As we go about our lives, let us carry Jesus' words in our hearts: “It is I; do not be afraid.” When we feel fear rising, let’s remind ourselves of His presence and choose faith over fear.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for being with us in every storm we face. Help us to feel Your presence, especially when we are afraid. Strengthen our faith so that we can trust in You, knowing that You are always near. Remind us that no matter how dark or difficult things may seem, we can rely on You. In Your name, we pray, Amen.
