Devotional Topic: Living in the Freedom of Truth
READ: John 8:31-59
Verse of the Day: John 8:32
Devotional Message:
(John 8:32)
"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Observation:
This verse is simple but incredibly powerful. Jesus spoke these words to people who were already beginning to believe in Him. They were familiar with their own religious laws, but Jesus was guiding them to a deeper understanding—a truth that could bring real freedom, not just outward obedience.
When Jesus talks about “the truth,” He’s referring to the truth of who He is and the truth of God’s love and purpose for us. Many of the people around Jesus were trapped by misconceptions about God and their own lives. They thought that following rules was enough, that their religious routines would save them. But Jesus wanted them to experience something more: a freedom that only comes from truly knowing God and letting His truth shape how we live, think, and see ourselves.
Sometimes we, too, can be trapped by things that seem true but are actually lies. Lies like “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll always be stuck this way,” or “God doesn’t really care about me.” These thoughts can hold us back from living in the freedom God has for us. But Jesus invites us to discover the truth that sets us free: the truth that we are loved, that we are forgiven, and that we have a purpose.
Application:
So how do we live in this truth? It starts with spending time in God’s Word. The more we read the Bible, the more we understand who God is, what He’s done for us, and how deeply He cares for us. We start seeing things through His eyes, and those lies we once believed begin to fade.
Next, it’s important to surround ourselves with people who encourage us in God’s truth. Whether it’s friends, family, or a church community, having others who remind us of God’s promises helps us stay grounded. When doubts or lies creep in, they can remind us of the truth we sometimes forget.
And lastly, living in the truth means being honest with God about our struggles. We don’t have to pretend to be perfect; God knows our hearts. When we admit where we’re struggling, He meets us with grace and helps us to walk in freedom.
When we choose to trust in the truth Jesus offers, we can break free from things that have held us back—like fear, shame, or negative self-beliefs. We start seeing ourselves as God sees us, and we begin to live with a joy and peace that only He can give.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for giving us the truth that sets us free. Help us to see ourselves through Your eyes and to believe in Your love and promises. Give us courage to let go of any lies we’ve held onto and to live in the freedom You offer. In Jesus' name, Amen.
