"He must become greater; I must become less."
Devotional Message:
These few words carry a big message about humility, purpose, and letting God take center stage in our lives. To understand the power of this verse, let’s first look at the life and purpose of John the Baptist. John was a man with a strong following. People came from all over to hear him preach, to be baptized by him, and to learn about God. But the moment Jesus came onto the scene, John didn’t cling to his own popularity or seek the spotlight. Instead, he willingly stepped aside and acknowledged that his role was to point others to Jesus.
This kind of humility and selflessness can be challenging. In a world that often encourages us to “be our best” and “stand out,” it’s natural to want to be noticed and appreciated. We work hard in our careers, our studies, our relationships, and even in our service to others. But John’s example reminds us of an important truth: life isn’t about our personal achievements or fame. Our lives are meant to reflect God’s greatness, not our own.
What does this look like practically? It means making a habit of putting God at the center of everything we do, from small daily choices to big life decisions. When you’re facing a tough decision at work or school, try asking, “How can I make choices that honor God?” If you’re receiving praise for something you’ve done well, humbly thank those around you, but also take a moment to give God the glory in your heart.
It also means trusting God with our ambitions and stepping back from the need for control. John the Baptist understood that God’s plan was bigger than his own; his role was to prepare the way for Jesus, not to hold onto the role he started. Like John, when we see God at work in new ways or calling us in new directions, we can let go of our need for control and trust that God’s plan is always better than anything we could imagine.
Another practical way to make God “greater” is in our relationships. Let’s treat others with kindness, patience, and forgiveness, just as God treats us. Rather than focusing on being right or proving a point, we can practice compassion and humility, remembering that our lives should point others to Jesus.
When we live with this mindset—“He must become greater; I must become less”—we experience a shift in our own hearts. We find more peace, knowing that we don’t have to bear the weight of being “the best” or “in control.” We become more grateful, recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God. And most importantly, we bring more of God’s light to the people around us, showing them a little more of His love, grace, and truth.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to let go of our own desires and ambitions, so that we can make room for Your greatness in our lives. Teach us to live with humility and to reflect Your love in all we do. May we always point others to You and find joy in putting You first. Amen.
