💁🏻 Joshua And The Jordan – Consecrated Before The Crossing
After forty years in the wilderness, Israel finally stood at the Jordan River. It was harvest season, and the river was overflowing its banks (Joshua 3:15). In front of them was deep water. Behind them was the desert. They could not go back, and they could not cross by their own strength. Before God performed the miracle, Joshua gave a command: “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you” (Joshua 3:5). To consecrate means to set apart for God. The people were to prepare their hearts, turn from sin, and remember that they belonged to Him. God was teaching them something important: His power is great, and He is holy. The miracle would come from Him alone, but they must approach Him with reverence and obedience. The priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant stepped into the water first (Joshua 3:13). When their feet touched the river, the water stopped flowing, and the people crossed on dry ground (Joshua 3:16–17). The Ark represented God’s presence going before them. This shows that God alone saves and fulfills His promises. Israel did not stop the river. God did. Yet their obedience showed faith in His Word. Grace does not remove the call to holiness; it creates it. Because God is holy and faithful, His redeemed people are called to live set apart lives (1 Peter 1:15–16).
