💁🏻 Who Is Joshua? – Courage Rooted In God’s Word
Joshua was the servant of Moses. He first appears as a young helper and soldier (Exodus 17:9–13). He stayed near the tent of meeting where God spoke with Moses (Exodus 33:11). He was also one of the twelve spies who trusted God when others were afraid (Numbers 14:6–9). After Moses died, God chose Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land (Joshua 1:1–2). Joshua must have felt afraid. He was now leading a whole nation. But God spoke clearly to him: “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). God did not tell Joshua to be brave because he was strong. God told him to be brave because God would be with him. God also told him to keep the Book of the Law on his lips and in his heart (Joshua 1:7–8). True courage comes from trusting God’s Word and God’s presence. Joshua’s leadership shows God’s covenant faithfulness. The promise to Abraham continues, not because of human strength, but because of God’s sovereign grace. Joshua’s name means “The Lord saves,” and it is the same name as Jesus. Joshua brought Israel into an earthly land, but Jesus brings His people into eternal rest (Hebrews 4:8–9). Courage is not self-confidence. It is confidence in God’s promises.
