Deborah was a prophetess and a judge in Israel. Her story is found in Judges 4β5. During her time, the people of Israel again did evil in the sight of God. Because of their sin, God allowed King Jabin of Canaan and his army commander Sisera to oppress them for twenty years (Judges 4:2β3). The people cried out to God for help.
Deborah was sitting under a palm tree, and the people came to her for judgment (Judges 4:4β5). She did not lead by loud personality or charm. She led by speaking the Word of God. She told Barak exactly what the Lord commanded: gather the army, go to Mount Tabor, and God would give victory (Judges 4:6β7).
Deborah shows us that real leadership is not about being impressive. It is about listening to God and obeying His revealed Word. God ruled His people through His Word spoken by His servant.
