💁🏻 Micah
Judges 17 tells the story of a man named Micah who lived during a time when “everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 17:6). Instead of following God’s commands, people began creating their own ways to worship. Micah returned silver he had taken from his mother, and she used part of it to make a carved idol (Judges 17:3–4), even though God had clearly forbidden idols (Exodus 20:4–5). Micah placed the idol in his home and built a private shrine. He also made an ephod and household gods and appointed one of his sons as priest (Judges 17:5). Later, a Levite came looking for work and agreed to become Micah’s personal priest because Micah offered him payment (Judges 17:10). Micah then said, “Now I know that the Lord will prosper me, because I have a Levite as priest” (Judges 17:13). He thought he was honoring God, but he had mixed true worship with false practices. This story warns about syncretism—mixing God’s truth with human ideas. True worship must always be guided by God’s Word, not human invention (Deuteronomy 12:32). Micah’s story reminds us that sincere belief is not enough; true faith must follow the clear teaching of Scripture.
