After God rescued Israel from Egypt with mighty power, He led them to the edge of the Promised Land. In Book of Numbers 13–14, twelve spies were sent to explore the land. They saw that the land was good, just as God had promised. But ten spies focused on the strong cities and powerful people. They were afraid. They spread fear through the camp. The people listened to the fearful report instead of remembering God’s promises. They cried all night. They complained against Moses. They even said they wanted to go back to Egypt. They talked about choosing a new leader. This was not just fear. This was rebellion against God. Only Joshua and Caleb trusted God. They said, “If the Lord delights in us, He will bring us into this land” (Numbers 14:8). But the people would not listen. Fear grows when we forget who God is. God had already shown His power through the plagues, the Red Sea, and manna from heaven. Yet the people doubted Him. This reminds us that the human heart is sinful by nature (Romans 3:10–12). We do not naturally trust God. Even after seeing His works, we still struggle with unbelief. Israel’s rebellion shows our deep need for God’s grace. Yet it also shows God’s faithfulness. Though He judged that generation, He kept His covenant promises (2 Timothy 2:13). The land was not the real problem. Their unbelief was (Hebrews 3:19).
