DO NOT TRADE JESUS FOR MONEY, AND DO NOT NEGLECT YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES TO HIM
In Revelation 2:8-9, the poverty referred to among the children of God in the Church in Smyrna was severe. They had nowhere to live because they couldn't get jobs due to being identified as Christians.
Before you could get a job, you had to join a 'trade guild,' and if you didn't join as a member, you would be blacklisted. No matter where you looked for work, you couldn't get hired unless you could prove you were a member of the trade guild. The reason why the children of God in Smyrna didn't want to be members of this guild is that in every company and every place where there was a trade guild, they held weekly festivals of demonic activity where members were required to kneel and worship the emperor's statue. Christians couldn't tolerate this and would rather lose their jobs than obey such commands.
