Ebenezer Moment

In 1 Samuel 7:12, after God delivered Israel from their enemies, Samuel set up a stone and named it “Ebenezer” , saying “thus far the Lord has helped us.”

An Ebenezer is a reminder of God’s faithfulness. It is literally “a stone of help”. It is a marker that reminds us that even in the midst of difficult circumstances God has not abandoned us.

The purpose of doing this:

1. To create a symbolic “Ebenezer” moment
It is a moment where the congregation remember God’s faithfulness through the decades. So the stone served as a visible reminder that God heard our prayers; God forgave our sins, God delivered us from dangers, and God remained faithful to His covenant.

2. To acknowledge God’s work and Divine intervention
One of the greatest spiritual dangers is forgetting God’s role in our successes. We often say, “we worked hard,” “ We planned it”, or “We are fortunate”. The Ebenzer reminds us to recognize God’s hand behind every blessing, provision, opportunity, and victory.

3. To inspire hope for the future
Samuel’s statement “Thus far the Lord has helped us” points not only backward but also forward. It implies: “The God who has helped us until now will continue to help us in the days ahead.” The stone was not merely a monument to the past. It was a foundation for future confidence. Israel would still face battles. They would still encounter
