PANGASINAN — Forty-year-old Myra and 30-year-old Joan are two mothers who share the same struggle: having to have their respective little boys eat healthy, nutritious food.

“My son’s favorite food is chicken,” Myra says of her six-year-old son, Bryle Andrew. “It’s his most requested. Sometimes he would eat it a lot and less of vegetables.

Similarly, Joan shares the same struggle with her own son, four-year-old Jayden. “My boy loves eggs and fish! He wouldn’t eat much leafy greens.”

Myra and Joan’s boys, however, were found to be underweight when their community health workers made rounds in their respective communities to see if their children were healthy and in the right weight. Upon learning that their children lacked in weight, both mothers were heartbroken.

Being underweight is also a case of malnutrition, as per the World Health Organization (WHO). The World Bank Human Capital Index released in 2019 showed that the Philippines ranks fifth in the East Asia and the Pacific Region, while 10th globally with the highest prevalence of stunting.

Luckily, there boys were able to bounce back thanks to World Vision’s 90-day nutrition classes dubbed Positive Deviance/Hearth. In the classes, children are who enrolled are rehabilitated through a change in their eating and hygiene habits.

Even Jayden and Bryle’s mothers learned a lot from the classes too, as they said. “I learned the importance of incorporating vegetables in our day-to-day meals,” Joan says. “I would chop in carrots or even kangkong in my son’s dishes and even rice without noticing it. He loves it!”

Now, both boys are as healthy as they can be. They can now play and enjoy their childhood without worrying of their health.

Apart from the nutrition classes, Myra and Joan’s families were able to receive help for their livelihood thanks to World Vision’s savings mechanism, the Community-managed Savings and Credit Association (CoMSCA).

“Since joining CoMSCA in 2017, I was able to save up to fix our home,” Myra says.

For Joan’s part, she shares that the savings group she joined gave her husband the opportunity to buy a tricycle.

Both mothers expressed their gratitude to World Vision. “I pray that through World Vision, every family they help is blessed with provisions such as we received,” Joan says.
