FLOODS AND DESERT | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (February 18, 2024)
Today is the First Sunday of Lent; and today’s gospel brings us back to the time when “the Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert” where he remained for 40 days in prayer and fasting.

Saint Mark tells us that Jesus was “tempted by Satan”—but “the angels [of God] ministered to him.” Friends, the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert prepared him for his mission, which is reminiscent of significant events in the Old Testament.
For 40 years, the Israelites wandered in the desert after they had been liberated from Egypt. For 40 days and nights, Elijah traveled through the desert in order to reach Mount Horeb. And in these moments of uncertainty and challenge, God silently accompanied and helped his people through the cloud that hovered over the Israelites and through his angel that ministered to Elijah and then to Jesus.
That is the good news, brothers and sisters! God will flood our deserts with his compassion and strength. Let us have confidence in him!
