We are in the Third Sunday of Lent, halfway through our Lenten journey. How have you been responding to the invitation to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving? Let Jesus’s conversation with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well guide us. What can we learn from it?

We can identify three points. First, personal encounter with Jesus inspires conversion. When the woman conversed with Jesus—in fact even reasoned with him—something in her was moved, opening her eyes to recognize the “prophet” before her. This encounter leads to the second point: it prompts us to proclaim Jesus to our community. The women, still reflecting on their conversation, invited her townspeople to see the man who told her everything she had done.
Finally, as we shall see in the reaction of the disciples upon seeing Jesus conversing with the woman, personal encounter with Jesus cannot be limited to a particular group. The Messiah comes to all. This requires openness to accept and share him with everyone.
