"How Doctrines Look" (Matthew 27: 45 - 56) April 13, 2025 Sunday Service
When Christians are given technical definitions of certain Christian doctrines, they often tune out, because they cannot figure out what is being stated. But is it possible to paint a picture or create an image of doctrine such that it is clearly understood. The passage paints vivid pictures of doctrine to make it not only comprehensible but even palpable.
There are 2 doctrines that are graphically portrayed in this narrative:
1. Doctrine of substitution - The substitutionary atonement refers to Jesus Christ dying as a substitute for sinners. The Scriptures teach that all men are sinners (Romans 3:9-18, 23). The penalty for our sinfulness is death. Romans 6:23 reads, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This the definition given by GotQuestions. Org.
Because Christ has become our substitute, we have been freed from the penalty of sin which is eternal punishment and separation
with God. Likewise, because Christ died in our place, we now have FREE ACCESS and the hope of RESURRECTION.
2. Doctrine of imputation of sin and righteousness- The doctrine of imputation teaches that while Adam's sin is imputed to us because he is our natural federal head, God imputes or accredits the righteousness and suffering of Jesus to those who are in him and, conversely, imputes the sins of those redeemed to Christ.
Quite understandably, such definitions can be intimidating to the lay person. However, this narrative that we are about to study makes us picture and even feel these doctrines.
