Is Peter the Rock of the Church?
Becoming Christians
In Matthew 16:18, Jesus says, “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.” While many assume Jesus referred to Peter as the rock, the original Greek reveals a deeper truth. “Peter” (Petros) means a small stone, while “rock” (Petra) refers to a massive, immovable bedrock. Scripture consistently identifies Jesus Christ as the true Rock of our salvation (1 Corinthians 10:4, Psalm 18:2, 1 Corinthians 3:11). The foundation of the Church is not Peter or even his confession—it is Christ Himself, the Messiah and Son of the living God. Building the Church on any man, no matter how devoted, is to place our faith on shaky ground. But building it on Yahshua ensures strength, stability, and truth. He alone is the cornerstone that can never be moved. Thus, the rock in Matthew 16:18 is Jesus Christ, and He remains the unshakable foundation of the true Church.
