We are on the Fifth Sunday of Easter, and today’s gospel brings us back to Jesus’s last supper with his disciples before his passion. It is only fitting to be reminded of what he taught them at the time as we continue our Easter observance.

According to Saint John, Jesus told them: “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” How did Jesus love them? He loved them unto death and back. He who is God deigned to become a human being, which led to a most humiliating death, so he could lead his people to the Resurrection. That is the depth of God’s love for all of us, brothers and sisters.
We pray for the grace to be able to love like God in Jesus, even just a fraction of it, that we may become true disciples of the Lord. Our love for one another is the mark of our discipleship.
