Devotional Message:
(I Peter 3:8-9)
“Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.”
Sometimes we overcomplicate things. We want to add so much to following Christ when Jesus made it pretty clear what He wanted us to do. He said that the two greatest commandments were to love God with our whole heart and to love our neighbor as our own self. The disciples heard it loud and clear and saw Jesus live it out right before their eyes. So when Jesus left this earth, they decided to live and teach the way Jesus did. John tells us not to pretend we love God, who we do not see, if we don’t love the people we do see. James says if we don’t help those in need that God brings into our path, how can we say we even have God’s love in us? Peter goes farther and outlines what our love should really be like. We are to be humble and sympathize with those in need. We are to be tenderhearted to those around us. We are not to repay evil with evil but should bless those that do not bless us. This is the way Jesus lived. The disciples did the same. They turned their world upside down with their love. God has called you and I to do the same. Today, might the love of God live in us and through us.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for the great love You have. Help me, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, to follow Your example. Help me love others the way You would want me to. In Your name I pray. Amen.
