When the emperor found out, he had Valentine arrested and later executed on February 14, 269 AD.

Some accounts say that before his execution, he sent a letter to a young woman, possibly the jailer’s daughter, and signed it “From your Valentine”—a phrase still used today in love letters and Valentine’s Day cards.
