The Gospel of Mark warns us about hypocrisy in prayer and fasting. It is better to do things for God when we're alone and in secret, because during these times, we can be most honest and vulnerable in front of Him. Being a follower of God should not be something that's so shown off to others that we keep on sinning. The real essence of our deeds for Him is found in the sincerity of our hearts, how we treat other people, and how we pursue having a personal relationship with Him.
