The flame is symbolic of Pentecost and the tongues of fire that came to rest on their heads, filling them with the Holy Spirit.

The image of Jesus that St. Jude holds is not a medal (commonly seen on all his statues) but the Mandylion, which is a cloth.
The picture here is St. Jude showing this image of Jesus to the King of Edessa. King Abgar suffered from leprosy and had heard about the healing miracles of Jesus. He sent and asked if he would come and heal him. Jesus sent word back that he would send his image through one of his apostles. After his death and resurrection, St. Jude arrived with the image. The King was healed instantly.

St Jude is also known as the saint of impossible cases. Probably everyone’s patron saint, since the “impossible” is what most of us deal with.

His devotion was relatively unknown until Jesus himself suggested it to St. Bridget of Sweden “In accordance with his surname, Thaddeus, the amiable or loving, he will show himself most willing to give help.”

At the Last Supper, Jude turned to Jesus and asked:
“Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”
“If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.“
