In Marawi City, Philippines, thereโs a group of 20 mothers who are making a spicy yet appetizing side dish called palapa out of ginger, onions, garlic, salt, chili, red bell pepper, and sakurab, a type of shallot that grows in cooler mountain areas.
We call them the Palapa Mothers.
โBack then, I didnโt have any idea about World Vision. But in 2022, World Vision came, and I became part of Go Baby Go (programme) And thatโs where the Palapa Mothers were also formed,โ shared Aina, one of the palapa mothers.
Childhood Rescue (CHR) has been working with the Palapa Mothers for more than two years now.
In 2017, these women fled for their lives during the Marawi Siege, they lost absolutely everything except their lives. The effects of mass displacement and trauma from the war are still felt daily.
But these mothers continue to pursue hope through the palapa-making business and build a sustainable and educated future for their children.
Today, weโre going to join one of the Palapa mothersโ first community savings and business development meetings facilitated by CHR.
