Listen to your own prayer for a moment. How much of it is asking, and how much of it is praising? For most of us the answer is uncomfortable, because our prayers lean heavily on requests. Here is the reason that matters. Prayer is worship. It is not only a place to bring our needs. It is a place to honor God for who He is. That is why our prayers should carry more thanksgiving than asking and more praise than anything else. Praise shifts our attention away from the size of our problems and back to the greatness of God. It also protects us from treating God like a vending machine that exists to solve our issues. Try starting your next prayer with praise. Tell God what you love about Him. Thank Him for what He has done. Then bring your requests, and notice how much steadier your heart feels.
