Karamihan ng mga Satanista, sumasamba sa diyablo, "diabolists", "Luciferians", at mga miyembro ng Iglesya ni Satanas ay nagaangkin na nagmula sa "LaVeyan Satanism", ipinangalan mula kay Anton LaVey, ang may-akda ng Satanic Bible at nagtatag ng unang Iglesya ni Satanas. Pinaniniwalaang sinimulan ni LaVey ang Unang Iglesya ni Satanas noong 1966.
