SEEK THE ESSENTIAL | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (August 3, 2025) with Sign Language

Today is the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and the gospel reminds us that a person’s life does not consist in material possessions alone.

There is a rich man whose riches continue to multiply. His land produces a bountiful harvest, and so he creates new and larger barns where he could store them. Then, he tells himself: “[Y]ou have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, and be merry!”

Then the parable reminds us about the uncertainty of life. That night the man dies. Who will inherit his possessions? Who will benefit from his hard work? It will end up in vain. Thus, the lesson: It is better to be rich in what matters to God.

Friends, what are we acquiring? How much are we saving? Do we work for what is essential in life? We hope we can accumulate riches in heaven by sharing what we have now with the poor, the vulnerable, the marginalized, the people with whom the Lord identifies.
