This Christian devotional explores one of Jesus’ most important teachings about tragedy, suffering, sin, repentance, judgment, and grace. In Luke 13, people brought Jesus two tragic events: Galileans who were killed by Pilate and eighteen people who died when the Tower of Siloam collapsed. They wanted to know whether these victims were greater sinners than everyone else. Jesus answered clearly: No.
Jesus rejected the idea that tragedy automatically proves someone is more sinful or that comfort proves someone is more righteous. Instead, He used these tragedies to point every listener toward the same urgent need: repentance and a Savior. The word “all” changes the entire perspective. There is no hierarchy of sinners before God. Every person has fallen short, and every person needs grace.
This daily Christian motivation challenges two attitudes that can quietly enter our hearts: judging another person's suffering as something they deserved, and assuming that our own blessings or comfortable circumstances prove that we are better than others. Jesus tears down both forms of pride. At the foot of the cross, the ground is level.
Romans 3:23–24 gives the gospel answer: all have sinned, yet all can be justified freely by God’s grace through Christ. Our greatest question is not simply, “Why did this happen to them?” but, “Am I ready to meet God? Am I trusting Jesus?”
