This was the order of God through his Prophet Samuel to King Saul. The Lord will punish the Amalekites for what they’ve done to Israel.
The order of God was NOT to spare any of the people nor their possessions.
However, King Saul didn’t followed the instruction of Prophet Samuel. He did not killed King Agag , the leader of the Amalekites. All of these happened because King Saul was afraid to the people who suggested these gestures.
So this happens:
“Then the word of the Lord came to Prophet Samuel: “I regret that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions.”
1 Samuel 15:10-11
Since that day, there was a new covenant that was made. God appointed a new King who was a shepherd boy, David. Prophet Samuel anointed David to be the new King.
“Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.”
1 Samuel 16:14
Evil spirits had been tormenting Saul day and night. So he hired the son of Jesse, David to be his servant. Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul and he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.
A day has come when the Philistines gathered their forces against the Israelites. Because of this, after David killed Goliath, king Saul hired him to be his servant and gave him a high rank in the army.
