SAINT HUGH OF GRENOBLE
BISHOP

Born into a noble family at Chateauneuf d’Isere, France, 1053, Hugh chose the religious life, becoming a canon in Valence. In 1080, when only twenty-seven and not yet ordained, he was made bishop of Grenoble. Strongly attracted to solitude, he would have preferred life as a monk, but his several requests to be relieved of his duties as bishop were turned down. He gave invaluable assistance to saint Bruno, helping him in the foundation of the first Carthusian community at Chartreuse, which was located in his diocese. After fifty-two years as bishop, he died at Grenoble, in 1132. Two years later he was canonized by Pope Innocent ii.
He is depicted in episcopal vestments over a white scapular.

NAME: Hugh is from the German and means “heart, spirit.”
