SAINT ISIDORE OF SEVILLE
BISHOP AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Isidore was born in Seville around 560 into a noble family from Cartagena, his older brother Leander also became a saint. Educated in the monastic life, he was bishop of Seville after his brother Leander and directed the diocese for thirty six years. His ministry saw the conversion of the Arian Visigoths and the organization of the Spanish Church. He presided over several councils and wrote many works, including the Etymologies, an encyclopedia of the knowledge of his time. He died in 636 and was canonized in 1598.
He is depicted in episcopal vestments.
NAME: Isidore is from the Greek and means “gift of Isis.”
