SAINT JOHN NEPOMUCENE
MARTYR
Born at Nepomuk in Bohemia in 1330. John was the preacher of King Wenceslaus IV and confessor of his queen, Joanna of Bavaria. He died in 1383, thrown into the Vitava River on the orders of the king for refusing to reveal the queen’s confession (Wenceslaus suspected she was guilty of infidelity).
He is depicted in a cassock and may bear the palm and five stars. He is invoked against the dangers of rivers and the sea, to obtain rain, and against slander.
