SAINT LEA OF ROME
WIDOW
Lea was a Roman matron, widowed when still young. The consul Vettius Agorius Praetextatus hope tp marry her, but she decided against a second marriage and, on the advice of Saint Jerome, turned instead to the religious life of a convent, joining the one that was already home to Paola and Mercella. The only information about her comes from a letter from Saint Jerome to Marcella, dated 384, the year of Lea’s death. The saint eulogized her virtues and her life which had been completely dedicated to prayer and charity.
Lea rarely appears in art, and when she does it is as a woman in prayer.
NAME: Lea is of Latin origin and means “lioness.”
