SAINT LEANDER OF SEVILLE

Born at Cartagena around 545, he chose the religious life, as did his brothers Isidore and Fulgentius and his sister Florentina, and battled the Arianism professed by the Visigoths then ruling Spain. Following important conversions in the royal family, he was expelled and took refuge in Constantinople, where he met the future pope Gregory the Great. Recalled to Spain, he was made bishop of Seville. He convened the Third Council of Toledo, which confirmed the conversion of the Visigoth kingdom to Catholicism. He died around 600.
He is depicted in episcopal vestments and is invoked against rheumatism.
