SAINT LONGINUS
MARTYR
Longinus is identified with three different people: the Roman centurion who recognized Christ as his savior during the Passion; the Roman soldier who pierced the side of the crucified Christ with a lance; and the leader of the group of soldiers sent to guard the tomb. According to tradition (both Greek and Latin) he converted after the experience. He became a disciple of the apostles, worked to help spread Christianity, and died a martyr in Cappadocia.
He is depicted as a roman soldier, often with the lance, often under the cross; sometimes he bears a palm branch. He is invoked against wounds from edged weapons.
