Matilda was born around 895 in Saxony and raised in the monastery of Erfurt, where her grandmother Maude was abbess. She was married to Henry I the Fowler, king of Germany, and led an exemplary life as wife, mother, and queen, distinguishing herself for her prayer and assistance to the poor, whom she often visited in disguise. She founded several monasteries, including that of Quedlinburg, where she died in 968.
She is depicted in regal dress.
