SAINT RUPERT
BISHOP
Rupert was born into a noble family of Irish origin, related to the Merovingians, at the end of the 7th century. After receiving a monastic education, he set about the evangelization of the Salzburg region and the Tyrol. He was the bishop, at first itinerant, at Salzburg, and acted to promote the development of the local salt mines. He died on March 27, 718. His relics are today in Salzburg cathedral.
He is depicted in episcopal vestments, often near a barrel of salt.
