THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD
SOLEMNITY
March 25

At the Annunciation St. Gabriel the Archangel told Mary that she would be the Mother of the son of God. Mary gave her “fiat” (Be it done), and conceived the Savior by the power of the Holy Spirit. Through her consent to God’s plan, she took an active role in the redemptive work of her Son, Jesus. We invoke her as the Mother of Christ and our Mother.

In the most common depictions of the event in Western art, the Virgin receives the announcement while in prayer at a reading stand, the angel speaks to her sometimes kneeling, sometimes standing, sometimes while still in flight, and often bears a branch of flowering lily as an attribute. A dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit, descends from above.
