THE SUFFERING SERVANT: AN ICON OF HOPE | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (April 13, 2025)

We commence the holy week, the peak of our Lenten journey, the commemoration of the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our week begins with the blessing of the palms, reliving the triumphant entry of our king into Jerusalem. We sing hosana to him who comes in God's name. On this day also, we proclaim the Lord's passion. Saint Luke tells us that the elders brought Jesus to Pilate on false charges for which the people demanded his crucifixion.

Even though he did not find Jesus guilty of the accusations, Pilate bowed to the persistent crowd. Their actions could make us lose hope in our fellow human beings. But Jesus and some people who encountered on his way to Calvary are faces of hope.

We think of Simon, the Cyrenian and the daughters of Jerusalem who stayed close to him. We remembered the thief crucified with Jesus, who recognized him as king. We recall how Jesus begged the Father to forgive those who persecuted him for they knew not what they were doing.

Friends, in moments of personal or societal darkness, let us look for the signs of hope that Jesus sends us. He the suffering servant, is the face of hope.
