THERE IS NO OTHER LORD | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (October 18, 2026) with Sign Language

Today is the twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time; in the gospel, Jesus invites us to put our conditions and concerns in the proper perspective.

We know that Jesus told the Pharisees and Herodians to “repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God”—but we do not stress enough the importance of the question preceding this statement. The Pharisees and Herodians were testing Jesus. They wanted to frame him as either an enemy of Rome, the foreign power occupying their land, or as an enemy of his own people.

Jesus thus asked them, holding a Roman coin: “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” It is an invitation to reflect, to sort things out, and to determine whom we are serving in life. Brothers and sisters, let us pray for this grace—so that we might not conflate our concerns and mix things up and end up serving false lords. Give to Caesar what is rightfully due to Caesar, and to God what is rightfully belongs to God. God alone is the Lord. Amen.
