We are on the Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today’s Gospel, we will hear the familiar parable of the wise and foolish virgins.

There were ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom to come. At the time, the custom required these maidens who were friends and maybe relatives of the bride to wait and welcome the bridegroom who would take his bride from her home to their new home. In the parable, there was a delay on the part of the bridegroom, so five of the virgins ran out of oil for their lamps.
They had to buy elsewhere. While the five virgins were away, the bridegroom arrived and the celebration began. Then the door was consequently closed. They were unable to participate in the feast. Drawing from this, Jesus tells his followers, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour. Do we have enough oil for our lamp, brothers and sisters?
It is time to reflect on our readiness to meet and welcome the bridegroom, who is Jesus, and participate in his feast, which is God's kingdom.
