Jesus was preaching about literal poverty, hunger, and persecution by saying that the poor are blessed, not because they are poor, hungry, mournful, or persecuted, but because God is going to change their situation! One day, God’s victory over evil through Jesus will be complete, then we will see life on earth as God intended it, free from the ravages of evil and sin.
