Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: "KNOWN BY GOD"
Verse of the Day: John 20:16
Devotional Message:
(John 20:16)
"[Mary turned toward him and cried out...'Rabboni!' (which means Teacher)."
Introduction:
Have you ever been in a crowded place, like a market, a church, or even a school hallway, where everyone seems to be moving around—yet someone calls your name, and instantly, you turn around? There’s something powerful about hearing your own name. It captures your attention. It’s personal. It means someone sees you, someone knows you.
That’s exactly what we see in John 20:16. Mary Magdalene is standing outside the tomb, weeping. She is heartbroken. She believes that Jesus—her Teacher, her Lord, the One who had changed her life—is gone forever. She came to honor Him, but now even His body seems to be missing.
She is overwhelmed with sorrow, blinded by grief. She doesn’t recognize Jesus when He stands near her. She mistakes Him for the gardener. But everything changes the moment He speaks one word:
“Mary.”
Observation:
This simple moment holds an extraordinary truth. Mary did not recognize Jesus by His appearance. Her eyes saw a man, a stranger. But her heart recognized His voice. It wasn’t until Jesus said her name that she realized who He was.
Why is that important? Because it shows us how personal Jesus is. The resurrected Christ—the risen King of glory—took the time to speak her name. Before announcing His victory to the world, before showing Himself to crowds, He met Mary in her brokenness and called her personally.
She didn’t have to earn it. She didn’t have to be important in the world’s eyes. She just had to be present. And when He said her name, her eyes were opened. Her sorrow turned to joy. Her despair turned to worship. Her fear turned to faith.
Jesus didn’t just rise for the world in general—He rose for each of us personally. He knows our names. He knows our stories. He knows our pain. And He meets us where we are, just like He met Mary.
Application:
Let’s bring this home. Many of us are like Mary. We come to Jesus carrying sorrow, confusion, questions, even fear. Life doesn’t always make sense. We face grief, loss, setbacks, and pain. We pray, but sometimes it feels like Jesus is distant or silent. We know the truth in our minds, but our hearts still ache.
And sometimes, even when Jesus is right there beside us, we don’t recognize Him. We’re too focused on the problem, on the pain, or on our expectations of how He should appear or act.
But Jesus is never far. And when the time is right, He calls us by name.
Not just a general calling. Not just a sermon or a song meant for everyone. He speaks in a way that is meant for you. In your spirit. In the quiet moments. Through a verse, a message, a prayer, a person, or even your pain—Jesus has a way of speaking directly to your heart.
When you hear Him call your name, everything changes. Your tears may still fall, but now you know He sees you. Your questions may not all be answered, but now you trust He’s with you. You’re not just a face in the crowd—you are known. You are loved. You are called.
Let’s also consider something else beautiful: Jesus didn’t wait for Mary to “get it together” before revealing Himself. He met her in her grief. That’s good news for us because it means you don’t have to be perfect for Jesus to speak to you. You don’t have to pretend. He meets you in your weakness, in your honest moments, in your tears—and He calls you by name.
Today, maybe you're in a season where it feels like Jesus is far away. Maybe you're overwhelmed, uncertain, or struggling with something heavy. Take heart—He is closer than you think. And He still calls. The question is, are we listening?
Reflection Questions :
1. Have you ever felt like Mary—alone, confused, or wondering where Jesus was in your situation?
2. What are some ways Jesus has “called your name” in the past?
3. How can you make space in your day to listen for His voice?
Encouragement:
Jesus is not too busy to notice you. He’s not waiting for you to fix yourself before He’ll call your name. He already knows everything about you—and He still chooses to draw near.
You are not forgotten. You are not invisible. You are known by God.
So when you’re struggling, when the tomb feels empty, when life feels dark—don’t give up. Stay close.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for knowing me by name. Thank You for seeing me, even when I don’t see You. Help me to recognize Your voice and trust that You are near. Speak to my heart, calm my fears, and remind me that I am never alone. Amen.
