Top 5 Filipino Heroes Forgotten by History
Unsung Patriots Who Deserve to Be Remembered
When we talk about Filipino heroes, names like José Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, and Emilio Aguinaldo often come to mind. Their stories are well-documented and taught in schools. But beyond these well-known figures, history holds the names of brave men and women who fought for the country’s freedom and ideals—yet, their sacrifices have been largely forgotten. Here are five Filipino heroes whose stories deserve more recognition.
1. Teresa Magbanua – The “Joan of Arc of the Visayas”
Known for her bravery during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American War, Teresa Magbanua was one of the few women who led troops into battle. Despite her notable achievements, especially in the Visayas, her story is often overshadowed by her male counterparts. She remains a powerful symbol of courage and empowerment.
2. Macario Sakay – The Revolutionary with a Lion’s Mane
After the fall of the First Philippine Republic, Sakay continued the fight against American colonization by establishing the Tagalog Republic. He was labeled a bandit by the Americans and eventually hanged. Today, he is rarely mentioned in textbooks, but he stood as one of the last Filipino revolutionaries to resist colonization.
3. Melchora Aquino – The Grand Old Woman of the Revolution
"While she is sometimes mentioned as ""Tandang Sora,"" her crucial role in supporting the Katipuneros with food, shelter, and medical care is often underappreciated. Even at the age of 84, she was exiled for aiding revolutionaries. Her selfless contributions are a reminder that heroism knows no age."
4. Gregoria de Jesus – The Lakambini of the Katipunan
As the wife of Andres Bonifacio and a founding member of the Katipunan's women's chapter, Gregoria de Jesus played a vital role in the revolution. She safeguarded important documents and took part in secret meetings. Despite her courage and involvement, her legacy is often reduced to simply being Bonifacio’s wife.
5. Julian Felipe – The Composer of the Philippine National Anthem
"Though his music lives on every time the Philippine national anthem is played, Julian Felipe himself is rarely acknowledged in discussions about national heroes. As the composer of ""Lupang Hinirang,"" he contributed significantly to the nation’s identity and pride."
These five individuals gave their hearts, minds, and lives for the Philippines. While history may not always shine the spotlight on them, it’s never too late to recognize their contributions. By remembering these forgotten heroes, we deepen our understanding of the country’s rich and complex fight for freedom.
