Topic: Is the love I give enough to take me to heaven?
Reading 1: Jeremiah 7:23-28
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9
Verse Before the Gospel: Joel 2:12-13
Gospel: Luke 11:14-23
In today’s Gospel reading from Mark 12:28-34, a scribe asks Jesus about the greatest commandment. Jesus replies by summarizing the essence of our Christian faith: we are to love God with all our heart, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. He explains that these commandments are the most important and hold greater value than any sacrifices we might make.
To love God means dedicating ourselves to Him, seeking His will, and living according to His teachings. Loving our neighbor calls for treating others—even those who are different and difficult—with kindness, empathy, and respect, extending compassion, and acting in ways that benefit them. This love that Jesus speaks about is all or nothing; it’s everyone or no one. The two commandments are intertwined, as loving God should inspire and empower us to love and serve others, recognizing them as our fellow human beings also created in God's image.
