If we will examine the history, the name "Roman Catholic Church" was given by the enemy of the Catholic Church. We are not the ones who popularized that name, but it was the protestants who apostatized the Catholic Church. It is a derogatory, pejorative or hostile name that protestants used to call us Catholics. And it's not only that, there are other names that protestants used to mock or belittle Catholics such as "Romish", "Romanist", "Popish", "Papist", and "Popery". The naming of the term "Roman Catholic" started only when the Anglican Church sect was founded by King Henry VIII on the 16th century. King Henry VIII was a former Catholic King of England who wanted to divorce his wife, but the pope did not allow him. Because divorce is not allowed in the Catholic Church. This made the king to denounce his Catholic faith and founded his own sect called "Anglican Church". This sect is also claiming to be Catholic. That is why they taught the teachings of "Branch Theory". According to them, the whole Catholic Church consists of 3 groups: namely Anglican Church, Greek Church and Roman Church. Thus, when they mentioned Catholics who are obedient to the Pope in Vatican, they would attached the word "Roman" to the "Catholic".

That law had spread throughout the countries that were controlled by the kingdom. It entails grave punishment if someone disobeyed that law. Hence, Catholics were forced to use the term "Roman Catholic" on those countries that prohibits the usage of the name "Catholic Church". Most of Catholics who lived in Protestant countries such as in USA, had generally accepted the term "Roman Catholic" than those unpleasant names like "Romish Catholic" or "Popish Catholic".
