BEGGING FOR COMPASSION | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (October 27, 2024)
Today is the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and the gospel narrates the familiar story of Bartimaeus, how Jesus healed him and restored his sight. This scene illustrates the popularity of Jesus at the time. There is a sizable crowd, and the blind Bartimaeus is heard crying out: “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” For doing so, he is rebuked by many. They want him to keep quiet. But Jesus stops for Bartimaeus, even asking his disciples to call him.

Friends, the Lord listens to our cries. He hears our pleas for compassion. His compassionate heart is touched by the faith of Bartimaeus. But Jesus also desires that his disciples reach out to the many Bartimaeus who are on the margins and suffering. Will we follow Jesus? Will we reach out to the sick, those rebuked for articulating their need for help, those who are silenced? Will we tell them and assure them: take courage; get up, Jesus is here for you? And will be humble like Bartimaeus to ask for Jesus’ compassion?
