Devotional Message:
(1 Samuel 18:3)
"Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself."

Observation

Jonathan, the son of King Saul, had every reason to despise David. As the rightful heir to the throne, he should have seen David as a rival. Yet, instead of treating David as an enemy, Jonathan chose to love him as his own soul. His telling room was filled with loyalty, selflessness, and obedience to God.

In the ancient world, a covenant was not just a casual agreement; it was a deep and binding commitment. By making a covenant with David, Jonathan was not only declaring their friendship but also recognizing that David was God’s chosen one. This was an act of humility, surrender, and faith. Jonathan did not fight for his own position but honored God’s plan, even when it meant stepping aside.

Jonathan also gave David his royal robe, armor, sword, bow, and belt (1 Samuel 18:4). This was a powerful gesture, symbolizing that he was surrendering his right to the throne and acknowledging that David was God’s anointed king. Instead of holding tightly to his privilege, he willingly gave it away for the sake of God’s will. This was not a small sacrifice—it was everything. Jonathan’s actions showed that true love and friendship are not about what we can gain but about what we are willing to give.

Application

We all have a telling room, and its contents are revealed in how we treat others, especially those who are succeeding, blessed, or receiving favor from God. Jonathan had every reason to be jealous, but he chose love over rivalry. How about us?
